Make your room look like a photo you love

Most people know what they like by pointing at it, not by naming a style. Upload a reference photo of a room you like together with a photo of your own, and the style is taken from the reference and applied to your room, whose walls, windows and doors stay where they are.

Things you can ask for

  • “Take the colours and materials from the reference, keep my sofa”
  • “Like the reference, but lighter”
  • “Take the lighting and textiles from the reference and keep my furniture”
  • “This style on a budget: keep what can be kept”
  • “The reference is a hotel lobby; make it work for a small bedroom”

What is taken from the reference

The style: the palette, the materials and finishes, the kinds of furniture and the mood of the light. What is not taken is the reference room itself. Its windows, proportions and layout belong to someone else's house, and your room keeps its own. That is why a reference of a vast loft can still help a small bedroom: you get its palette and materials at your room's scale.

Choosing a good reference

  • One clear style per photo. A reference with three ideas in it gives a muddled result.
  • A whole room rather than a detail. A close-up of a cushion says little about a room.
  • Similar light if you can: a sunlit reference applied to a north-facing room will look different, and that is the honest answer.
  • A similar room type helps (a bedroom for a bedroom), but it is not required.
  • Reference photos, like your own, stay private to your account.

Step by step

  • Upload a wide daylight photo of your own room, from a corner or the doorway.
  • Add the reference photo as the style, instead of choosing a preset or describing one.
  • Mark the items in your room Keep, Remove or Replace.
  • Choose a mode and a budget level, and run the design.
  • Compare with your original, then revise in words: “closer to the reference's colours”, “less dark”.

When the result does not look like the reference

Usually it is because the rooms are very different: a reference full of daylight and a room with one small window, or a reference with an arch and a room without one. The redesign keeps your architecture, so it cannot add the reference's windows or arches; it brings across what can be brought across. If the result is too far off, name what you liked most in a revision.

Frequently asked

Will my room end up looking like the reference?
It will share its style: palette, materials, kinds of furniture and mood. It keeps your own walls, windows, doors and viewpoint, so it will not be the same room.
Can it find the furniture in the reference?
No. It does not identify brands or products and does not produce a shopping list. It brings across the type, colour and finish of what it sees.
Can I adjust the result after using a reference?
Yes. Revise it in a sentence or with the toggles; the previous design is the base, so what you do not mention stays.
Is the reference photo private?
Yes. Like your room photo, it stays private to your account and is never published.
