Redesign your dining room from a photo
A dining room is used for a few hours a day and looked at for the rest, so it has to look good empty. Upload a photo of yours, or of the dining end of an open-plan room, and see the table, the light over it and the walls around it rethought.
Things you can ask for
- “Round oak table, rush-seat chairs and a large paper pendant hung low over the table”
- “Modern classic: panelled walls, a dark wood table, upholstered chairs and a pair of wall lights”
- “Keep the table, replace the chairs with mismatched vintage ones and add a sideboard”
- “Make the dining corner feel separate from the kitchen with a rug and a pendant”
- “Limewashed walls, terracotta tones and a linen tablecloth”
Light first, then the table
The most effective single change in a dining room is a pendant hung low over the table, centred on the table rather than on the ceiling. As a rule of thumb, the bottom of the shade sits about 75 to 90 cm above the tabletop: low enough to pool light on the table, high enough to stay out of people's eyes. Put it on a dimmer and add a second, lower source, such as wall lights or a lamp on the sideboard, for evenings.
- Table shape: round tables suit square rooms and smaller groups; rectangular and oval ones suit longer rooms.
- Rug: large enough that the chairs stay on it when pulled out, or no rug at all.
- Walls: dining rooms take strong colour well because they are mostly used in the evening, and a dark wall flatters candlelight.
- Storage: a sideboard gives the room a second focal point and somewhere for everything that otherwise ends up on the table.
Dining areas in open-plan rooms
If the table sits at one end of a kitchen or living room, the job is to make it a zone: a pendant over the table, a rug under it, and a change of wall colour or a piece of art on the nearest wall. Photograph the whole open-plan space with the table in it, so the redesign can see how the zone relates to the rest of the room.
Getting a good dining room result
Stand in the corner diagonally opposite the table, phone in landscape, with the ceiling line in frame so there is somewhere for a pendant to hang. Clear the tabletop or choose Clean & redesign. Mark the table Keep if it is staying; new chairs alone often change a dining room more than people expect, and you can compare that against a full redesign as a second option.
Frequently asked
- Can it show a pendant where I have no ceiling point?
- It can show one where you ask, because it is a picture. Moving a ceiling point is a job for an electrician, so check that before you fall for the design.
- Will it tell me what size of table fits?
- No. The image has no measurements. As a rough guide, leave about 90 cm between the table edge and a wall or furniture so chairs can be pulled out, and measure your room.
- Can I keep my table and only change the chairs?
- Yes. Mark the table Keep and the chairs Replace. The spec panel shows what was kept and what was added.
- Does it work for a dining corner in a kitchen?
- Yes. Include enough of the kitchen in the photo for context; the units and appliances stay where they are.
