Industrial style, applied to your own room
Industrial style comes from converted warehouses and factories, where the brick, pipework and steel were already there and people furnished around them. In an ordinary room it has to be suggested through materials and light instead, and a redesign of your own photo shows how far to take it before it turns into a theme bar.
What the Industrial preset asks for
Exposed brick or concrete textures, black steel, reclaimed wood, leather, factory-style pendant lights.
Things you can ask for
- “Exposed brick look on the back wall, black steel shelving and a leather sofa”
- “Soft industrial: reclaimed wood, black metal, cream textiles and plants”
- “Factory pendants over the table, a concrete-look floor tone and steel-framed chairs”
- “Industrial home office with a reclaimed wood desk and a metal filing cabinet”
- “Keep the sofa, add a black metal coffee table and warm filament bulbs”
What defines the style
- Raw surfaces: brick, concrete and plaster left visible.
- Black steel in frames, shelving, table legs and light fittings.
- Reclaimed or heavily grained wood, often in thick slabs.
- Leather and canvas upholstery, worn in rather than new.
- Factory-style pendants, exposed bulbs and metal shades.
- Greys, browns and black, warmed with rust, tan and green.
Softening it for a home
Pure industrial can be cold, hard and loud, because hard floors and bare walls echo. The version that works in a home keeps the steel and wood and adds a large rug, linen curtains, plants and lamps at lower heights. If the first result feels harsh, ask for “softer and warmer” as a revision; the previous design stays the base, so the industrial elements remain.
Common mistakes
- Theme-park props: fake pipes, wall-mounted gears, signage.
- Brick-effect finish on every wall. One textured wall is plenty.
- All metal and no wood, which reads as an office.
- Only cool light. Industrial rooms look best in warm, low light.
Light and texture
Industrial rooms rely on light to stop the hard materials feeling cold. Use warm bulbs, around 2200 to 2700 K, in metal or glass shades, and hang pendants low over a table or an island. Swing-arm wall lights suit reading corners and bedsides. Then contrast hard with soft: a wool rug on a concrete-toned floor, linen against brick, a worn leather chair beside a steel shelf. A textured wall is only the backdrop; the middle of the room still needs warmth.
Rooms it suits, and how to try it
Open-plan living rooms, lofts, kitchen-diners and home offices. It is harder in a small, low bedroom, where heavy materials close the room in. Photograph from a corner with the ceiling line visible, so pendants have somewhere to hang, and choose the Industrial preset. A brick look on a wall is a finish in the picture; the wall itself stays where it is.
Frequently asked
- Can it show the brick behind my plaster?
- No. It can show a brick-effect or textured finish on a wall, but what is actually behind your plaster is not something a photo can reveal.
- Does industrial suit a small flat?
- In small doses. Black metal frames and one reclaimed wood piece in an otherwise light room work better than the full look.
- Can I mix it with another style?
- Yes. Describe the mix in words, such as “industrial with Scandinavian warmth”, or compare Industrial and Organic Modern as two options side by side.
- Will it suggest where to buy factory lights or reclaimed wood?
- No. It shows the look in your room but does not identify brands, link to products or give prices.
